Jessica sat pressed against the passenger door of the twins' red Fiat Spider, drumming her fingers on the notebook in her lap. She was furious. She turned angrily toward Lila Fowler, who was squeezed between the twins in the small convertible. "I can't believe it!" she exclaimed. "I just can't believe it."

Lila smoothed her hair and raised her eyebrows. "I don't know why you're so upset, Jess. It's not that big a deal."

"Not that big a deal!" Jessica shouted. "I've been counting on you as my right hand for this picnic, and now you announce that you're going to New York next week. If that isn't a big deal, I don't know what is!"

"Calm down, Jess," Elizabeth said as she turned into the Sweet Valley High parking lot. "It's not Lila's fault that her aunt invited her out to visit."

"Oh, Liz," Jessica replied, "don't you see, she's not going because her aunt wants her there. She's going because she wants a new wardrobe."

Lila rummaged through her purse and pulled out a hairbrush. She began running it through her light brown hair. "Don't act so self-righteous, Jessica Wakefield. If you had the chance, you'd do the same thing."

"I would not," Jessica replied defiantly. "Not if my best friend were depending on me."

Elizabeth pulled the car into a parking space in the Sweet Valley High lot and shut the engine off. "Well, Jess, Lila isn't leaving until Friday. The picnic isn't until a week from Saturday, so that still leaves you a whole week. I'm sure Lila can help you out with all the details until she goes."

"Well, actually," Lila said quietly, "I really have a lot to do to get ready for the trip. I'm afraid I won't have a lot of time."

"Lila Fowler!" Jessica yelled. "I am never, ever speaking to you again as long as I live!"

Elizabeth got out of the car, followed by Lila. She winced as Jessica got out and slammed her car door shut. She stomped off across the parking lot, and Lila hurried after her, trying to explain.

Elizabeth smiled. She knew that Jessica would be able to handle the picnic by herself, and that a week after Lila got back from New York, she and Jessica would be best friends again.

Ken pulled his car into a parking space and shut off the ignition. He rubbed his hand over his eyes. He felt as if he hadn't slept in a week. Even worse, he felt the beginning of a headache. He couldn't shake the black feeling that had come over him the night before. But it was too late now. He had decided what to do, and everything was going to be all right. Of course he couldn't let anyone know about it.

Ken heard someone call his name. Turning around, he saw Elizabeth Wakefield walking toward him. He wanted to turn and run away, but Elizabeth had already seen him. Just the sight of her made him feel worse.

Elizabeth called to him again and waved as she walked over to him.
